Frosted Shredded Wheat Cereal – Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats Vs. Safeway Signature Select Frosted Shredded Wheat

In the second installment of this cereal comparison series, we have an all-time classic going up against one of many off-brand (in this case, store brand) competitors. I grew up on Kellogg’s Frosted Shredded Mini Wheats, and they will always have a special place in my heart. But once I got older and started to buy my own groceries I realized – maybe paying so much extra for a brand on the box and a brighter color palette just isn’t worth it. This is where Safeway Signature Select Frosted Shredded Wheat cereal came into my life.

Cereal Cost

Going off the standard price at Safeway, you’ll be paying $4.99 per 18oz box of the Kellogg’s, whereas you pay only $3.00 for the same 18oz box of Signature Select Frosted Shredded Wheat. This works out to 27 cents per ounce for the name brand, vs only 17 cents per ounce for the off brand, a not insignificant savings (especially if you eat as much cereal as I do).

Frosted Mini Wheats Nutrition

When it comes to nutritional value, neither of these are going to have you winning marathons or getting your body fat to 1%. And indeed, when looking at the values per serving size, we can see there is very little difference.

The Signature Select frosted wheats have a slightly smaller serving size, which accounts for most of the difference in values. The only win one way or another would go toward the Signature Select, which does have slightly less sodium per serving even taking into account the slightly smaller serving size. The added vitamins and minerals are slightly different in each, so a direct comparison is difficult, though again the Signature Select does come out slightly ahead with increased amounts of calcium, potassium, thiamin, and niacin.

And How About The Frosted Shredded Wheat Taste?

Luckily, I can say after many tastings that both the Signature Select Frosted Shredded Wheat and the Kellogg’s cereal taste as near to identical as you can get in a subjective taste test. This means you won’t sacrifice any of the great frosted wheat flavor while saving your money! The identical taste also carries whether you’re eating them dry (which I do recommend), or with milk.

As near I can tell, both also have about the same ratio of heavily frosted to not-so-frosted mini wheats (you’ll generally get a good mix of both in each bowl, though eating them dry can introduce a little risk of getting a “plain” mini wheat).

In conclusion, I can heartily recommend the Safeway Signature Select Frosted Shredded Wheats over their more expensive name brand competitor.
