The Drifted Self

The self does not disappear all at once. It is gradually translated into profiles, measurements, performances, predictions, and prompts that systems can process.

01 — The Profile Replaces the Person

A person becomes increasingly represented by the simplified profile a system can store, sort, and evaluate.

Core pattern: Representation begins to substitute for identity

02 — The Measured Self

Sleep, mood, productivity, attention, and health become numbers that begin shaping how a person understands their own experience.

Core pattern: Measurement begins to define what feels real

03 — The Performed Self

A person learns to present a different coherent version of themselves within each social and institutional setting.

Core pattern: Expected performance replaces continuity of self

04 — The Suggested Self

Recommendation systems learn from past behavior and return those patterns as clothing, music, food, opinions, destinations, and desires.

Core pattern: Prediction becomes difficult to separate from preference

05 — The Searchable Self

Search results, profiles, posts, reviews, and data records form a public identity that can become more authoritative than lived experience.

Core pattern: Searchable identity begins to outrank lived identity

06 — The Optimized Self

Time, attention, effort, behavior, and feedback are processed into a version of the person that is efficient, predictable, and useful.

Core pattern: Self-improvement becomes self-compression

07 — The Predicted Self

Systems use accumulated behavioral data to anticipate future choices, then shape the environment in ways that make those predictions more likely.

Core pattern: Prediction begins producing the behavior it predicts

8 — The Prompted Self

A person asks a system to interpret the world, receives a generated response, and carries that response into the next question.

Core pattern: Generated outputs become inputs into the self
