Popular Off Brand Examples
We frequently get asked for off brand examples, here at the Off Brand Guy. So we have put together an extensive list of the most popular off brands. Some of these product lines are regional and some of these are available throughout the country. According to Consumer Reports, the cost of store-brand foods and beverages is at least 20 to 25 percent less than name brands of the same product. Please let us know about your favorite off brand products.
Are Off Brands The Same As Name Brands?
An off brand product is a generic product that may be similar to a branded product in substance and functionality, but lacks the marketing and branding. Some people think that private label products are of inferior quality. If the active ingredients are the same, in many cases this is just not true.

Great Value
What is Walmart’s off brand? Great Value is one of Walmart’s private label brands. It may very well be the most well known store brand. There is a Walmart in practically every city in the country. Walmart works with a variety of manufacturers to source their Great Value products. The marketing is simple and the price is always right. Some of the items are worth the savings and others are not. You have to pay attention.
Kroger
Kroger private label products are available at many of the grocery chains in the Kroger family. In my area this includes Fred Meyer and QFC. The others include Ralphs, Dillon’s, Smith’s, King Soopers, Fry’s, City Market, Owen’s, Jay C, Pay Less, Baker’s, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, and Mariano’s. In general, QFC is more of a specialty store so the Kroger products always seem reasonably priced in comparison to the name brand options. But in comparison to the Great Value items at Walmart the Kroger products are typically more expensive. One interesting thing is that the price of a given generic Kroger product will vary across the different Kroger grocery chains.

Safeway Signature Select
Safeway Signature Select is the Safeway private label brand. The brand has evolved over the years especially as premium store brands have become more popular. The brand is an excellent option for grocery store basics like pasta and tomato sauce. I would skip it for specialty items like ice cream. I will give Safeway credit for the wide selection of options. While Walmart keeps it simple, Safeway offers every imaginable flavor and variety for their store brand products. This is true whether we are talking about salsa or soup.
Amazon Basics
An off brand examples list would not be complete without, Amazon Basics, the new player in the off brand world. This is a brand our readers are always requesting input about. The best thing is that Amazon Basics is a way to get affordable off brand products delivered to your door for free with a Prime membership. Amazon offers generic t-shirts, electronics, and much much more. Some of the most popular Amazon items include the paper shredder, batteries, kitchen knife set, iphone charger, Dutch oven, rubber car floor mats, etc.
Trader Joe’s
Trader Joe’s is a little bit different than the other players on this list. Trader Joe’s offer nothing but store brand products. My favorite thing about Trader Joe’s is I can grab what I want and never worry about getting ripped off. They have a solid selection of unique and eccentric products. You can know that you are paying for quality not high budget TV commercials or billboards.

Kirkland Signature
Kirkland Signature is a fan favorite. This is of course Costco’s generic brand. The Kirkland Signature brand is popular for the ridiculous large quantities. This is great for families but not so much for couples and single folks. My favorite thing about the Costco store brand is the quality. It is typically a step up from the other off brand products. Costco is pretty transparent about the name brand manufacturers they partner with. For example, the Kirkland Coffee beans are roasted by Starbucks. Now, that is a quality off brand product!
Dollar Tree Store Brand
Dollar Tree can be reasonably included on our list of top off brand examples. Dollar Tree offers a mix of name brand and generic items. To be fair, some of the best deals are the name brand items. This includes products from Campbell’s Soup, Rubbermaid, Dial, Colgate, Dawn, and Gain. Sometimes the name brand manufacturers even make specific product versions that are only available at Dollar Tree. On the other hand, the quality of the off brand products are all over the board.
