Dr Pepper is a strange beverage. You either love it or you hate it. Regardless, it remains one of the most popular soft drinks. I don’t even know how I would describe the taste. Which is a necessary step for comparing Safeway’s off brand Dr Pepper to the real thing. Fans of the beverage indicate the unique taste is characterized by 23 flavors. A tough taste to replicate, indeed.
The 23 flavors are cola, cherry, licorice, amaretto (almond, vanilla, blackberry, apricot, blackberry, caramel, pepper, anise, sarsaparilla, ginger, molasses, lemon, plum, orange, nutmeg, cardamon, all spice, coriander juniper, birch and prickly ash” – Dr Pepper
Knock Off Dr Pepper
I notice two characteristics that can ruin an off brand soda. First, the flavor is overdone in attempt to prove it is as good as the name brand version. Secondly, the carbonation is off. Soft drinks can be finicky business. The right level of syrup, the right flavor, and the correct level of carbonation make all the difference. This is the difference between a flat, tasteless gas station soda and a perfect beverage freshly poured at McDonald’s.

Dr Pepper Knock Off Brands
There is no shortage of off brand Dr Pepper copycats. Some of the most popular include:
- Dr Dynamite Soda – Safeway
- Dr Shasta – Shasta Soda
- Pibb Xtra or Mr. Pibb – Coca Cola Company
- Dr Becker – Blue Sky
- Dr West – Western Family
- Dr K – Kroger
Off Brand Dr Pepper
One thing great about the real Dr Pepper is the history. In my opinion, this almost adds to the flavor of the name brand. That is until I take into account the price. Did you know there is a Dr Pepper Museum?
2 Liter Dr Pepper Price
The regular price of the name brand Dr Pepper at Safeway is $2.97. I can usually find Dr Dynamite for only $1. For heavy soda drinkers, that is some serious savings. To be exact, you will save 66.67% for every 2 Liter bottle purchased. On another note, if you are drinking multiple containers of these a week you should probably slow down.
Is Dr Pepper High In Caffeine?
The Safeway off brand Dr Pepper includes 12mg of Caffeine per serving. A serving in this case is made up of 12 fluid ounces. That is not very much comparatively speaking. According to the Dr Pepper website, the name brand version includes 28mg of caffeine per 8 fluid ounce serving. So to make this comparison apples to apples, that would be 42mg per 12 fluid ounces. I am not sure why Safeway decided to go lower on the caffeine.
Off Brand Dr Pepper Vs. Big Soda
Did you know that the Keurig Green Mountain company owns the Dr Pepper Snapple group? It is crazy to see how consolidated the industry has become. If you know the Off Brand Guy mindset, it should come as no surprise that I view the Keurig coffee pods as possibly the least cost effective way to enjoy a beverage. As I was searching online I saw a press release about Keurig Dr Pepper Strengthening its Commitment to Water Stewardship. This cracked me up. They could start helping the environment by not mass producing sugar water in plastic bottles.
Is There A Dr Pepper Shortage 2021?
Soda and beer manufacturers have been experiencing a lack of cans because of the national aluminum can shortage, which experts say was caused by an increase in drinking at home instead of in restaurants and bars because of the coronavirus pandemic” –Kearney Hub
Here is another reason to drink off brand Dr Pepper. Not only is it cheaper, but the name brand version may be hard to find. Due to the global Coronavirus pandemic soft drink manufacturers are struggling with the aluminum can shortage.

Ultimate Off Brand Dr Pepper Taste Test
Look at the clip below. Now this is someone who is thorough with their taste test! Though, I wouldn’t call the Blue Sky Dr Becker a knock off. It is more accurately described as a premium beverage. Next look at the far right. You will see that Safeway’s Dr Dynamite is part of the review.
