A collection of short papers examining how metrics, proxies, incentives, and other representations can become detached from the realities they were created to describe or preserve.

These papers trace a recurring pattern. A representation begins as a useful simplification of reality, becomes operationally important, and then starts shaping behavior around itself. The deeper failure appears when the representation continues functioning even after its relationship to the underlying condition has weakened. Measured success, procedural compliance, and internal coherence can persist while corrective contact with reality declines.
